The Ships spares division of Woker Freight Services (WFS) recently handled the customs clearance of 1,489 bags of Barite that were imported through the Walvis Bay port. Each bag weighed about 1,500kg and were shipped from the United Arab Emirates aboard the bulk vessel, Green Pearl.
Barite is mainly used in the oil and gas industry as a weighting agent in drilling mud. It is also used as an aggregate in a “heavy” cement, for making smooth and corrosion resistant coating for trucks and automobiles, as radiation shielding cements and glass ceramics, as a pigment in paints and as a weighted filler for paper (playing cards), cloth and rubber.
The WFS team were given a tight schedule of 40 hours to ensure the barite was offloaded and managed to complete the process within 24 hours. Walvis Bay Stevedoring took care of the offloading while Ocean Liner Services ensure all the husbandry and ships agency requirements of the vessel were attended to.
